When it comes to attaching custom patches to garments, iron on embroidered patches are just about the easiest, fastest way possible. With just a little bit of preparation, you can have your patches securely attached and ready to wear in minutes.
Sew-on patches are standard, but they do require both time and skill to attach properly. Just about anyone can easily attach iron on patches with little fuss.
Start with the garment you want to attach the patch(es) too. Some materials are NOT suitable for iron on patches. These include:
· Leather
· Lace
· Silk
· Rayon
· Vinyl
· Nylon
· Waterproof Rainwear
· Highly Elastic Fabrics
If you try to iron on a patch with any of those fabrics, you’re likely to ruin the patch, the garment, and maybe even the iron. Stick with fabrics that can take the heat such as cotton, polyester or poly/cotton blends.
If you know your fabric is suitable, lay the item you want to attach the patch to flat on a smooth, flat, heat-resistant surface, such as an ironing board. Position your patch exactly where you want it on the garment. (Remember, this is a one-shot opportunity.)
Place a thin towel or washcloth over your patch. Never apply heat directly to the patch itself.
Set your iron to the highest temperature your fabric can take. (For cotton, this will typically be at or very close to the highest temp the iron can reach.) Be sure the Steam function is turned OFF.
Once the iron is up to the proper temperature, place the iron on the covered patch and press straight down firmly. Do not move the iron. Just hold it in place for 15 to 20 seconds, then lift it off.
Carefully remove the towel, then try to lift up the edge of the patch. If it lifts, replace the towel and apply the iron for another 10 seconds or so.
Once the patch is firmly set, just let it cool for a few minutes. Once it cools down, you’re all set. You’ve ironed on a patch! We told you it would be easy.
Now that you know how easy and fast that can be, it’s time to order patches! Call or email us for all your custom patch needs. And don’t worry if your patches can’t be ironed on. We offer a range of other attachment methods as well, and will be glad to show you which will work best for your needs.
